Jeff Altman: A Brief Biography

Jeff Altman, born on August 13, 1951, is an American stand-up comedian and actor. He is well-known for his frequent guest appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman, having made 40 appearances, the most recent being on June 19, 2014. Altman has also showcased his acting skills in various movies and television shows, taking on roles such as Dr. Gene Splicer in Tiny Toon Adventures and Professor Dweeb in Slimer and The Real Ghostbusters. However, he is most recognized for his recurring portrayal of Hughie Hogg, the nephew of Jefferson Davis Hogg, on the popular TV series, The Dukes of Hazzard.

Altman’s television career spans different shows, including being a cast member of the 1977 Starland Vocal Band Show and starring as sleazy record promoter Lennie Richfield in the movie American Hot Wax in 1978. He also hosted the short-lived NBC variety show Pink Lady and Jeff in 1980, which was listed as the #35 worst TV show of all time by TV Guide. In the mid-1980s, Altman became the in-house comedian of Solid Gold, creating various characters for the show. He has also been involved in directing sitcoms, was a spokesperson for Arby’s restaurants, and even served as the uncredited host of a defensive driving course available through Blockbuster Video. During the 1990s, he appeared on the NBC series Nurses during its first season (1991–1992), but was eventually written out as the show underwent changes for its second season.

A notable element of Altman’s stand-up act is his comical impression of his father, and he continued to amuse audiences with his Nixon impression well into the 1980s.
